About Me
HELLO!
I'm Ana Maria Lopez
I was born in Barcelona and came to England in my twenties. I had learned French at school and because of the area I come from, as well as Spanish I am also a Catalan speaker. In London I worked as an au-pair for an English family and although I didn’t speak or understand English when I arrived, I was determined to learn the language and become fluent as quickly as possible. Which I did, simply by being surrounded by it and copying and repeating what I heard. Like a child would. I didn’t even go to classes, the people and the country were my teachers. I taught myself how to write English by reading. Initially children’s books and nursery rhymes, and also music papers which I was very interested in but for those I needed a dictionary. I also watched a lot of telly, from children’s programmes to comedies, music shows, adverts…they were all grist to the mill.
I hold a Certificate in Language Teaching to Adults, awarded jointly by the University of London, Goldsmiths’ College and the Instituto Cervantes in London.
I have taught Spanish for the last 19 years. During that time I have been a specialist teacher in French and Spanish in two state primary Schools in South London and also run many Spanish Afterschool Clubs. I also taught the language in an independent Secondary School. As a private tutor I have prepared a large number of students for their final exams, helping them to achieve top grades. These are GCSE, A-level and University students.
I have taught adults both individually and in small groups which I run from my home, starting at beginner level and slowly progressing to fluency in the language. The age groups range from 25-93.
During the pandemic all my teaching was done online through Zoom. I was surprised how effective and convenient this could be. I now do most of my tutoring and teaching on Zoom, parents prefer it because they don’t have to drive their kid to my house, find some parking and wait in the car for an hour. It saves on petrol and travelling time and it can be done from anywhere where there’s an internet signal.
Some people, mostly adults, still prefer face-to-face learning and I do offer this option to those who wish to come to me.
As you can see, I enjoy language learning and passing on my skills through my teaching and tutoring. I believe that learning should be fun, that we don’t all learn at the same pace and that learning a language is not only an academic discipline but also a life-skill that transcends the classroom. It is about communication and understanding.
I will be delighted to teach you if you decide you would like to learn Spanish with me.
